LaCie Mobile Drive Secure 4TB Review: Portable Storage with USB-C and Password Protection
Large photo libraries, videos, project files, and computer backups can quickly consume internal storage. The LaCie Mobile Drive Secure 4TB (STLR4000400) is a portable external hard drive designed for users who want plenty of storage in a compact USB-C format. It combines 4TB capacity, USB-C connectivity, password protection, backup software, and Rescue Data Recovery Services, making it particularly useful for creative work, backups, and everyday file storage.
4TB Storage for Large File Collections
The main advantage is the 4TB capacity. That provides plenty of room for:
- Photos and videos
- Work and college projects
- Computer backups
- Music and media libraries
- Large creative files
- Archived documents
USB-C Connectivity
The drive uses a USB 3.2 Gen 1 USB-C interface and works with compatible USB-C hosts, including USB4, USB 3.0, Thunderbolt 3, and Thunderbolt 4 systems.LaCie rates file transfers at up to 130MB/s under suitable conditions. Real-world speeds will vary with file type, computer hardware, workload, and other factors.
A USB-C cable is included in the box.
Works with Windows and Mac
The Mobile Drive Secure is designed to work with most modern Windows and macOS computers, making it convenient for users who switch between different systems.LaCie also provides its Toolkit software for features such as one-click and scheduled backups.
Anyone planning to use the drive with Time Machine or a particular file system should check the current setup instructions, as reformatting may sometimes be required.
Password Protection Adds Extra Security
One feature that separates the Secure model from a basic external hard drive is password protection.LaCie lists the STLR4000400 as a self-encrypting drive and provides security functionality for both Windows and macOS.
This can be valuable if you regularly carry work files, personal documents, or other information you would prefer not to leave openly accessible if the drive is misplaced.
Password protection is still only one part of good data security, so important files should have another backup elsewhere.
Recycled Materials in the Design
LaCie has also incorporated recycled materials into this generation of Mobile Drive Secure. The current official data sheet states that the product contains a minimum of 25% recycled plastic and aluminium by weight.
The Space Grey enclosure has a clean, professional appearance that fits naturally alongside modern laptops and desktop setups.
Rescue Data Recovery and Creative Software Offer
The drive includes three years of Rescue Data Recovery Services, subject to the applicable service terms and regional availability.Current official documentation also lists a promotional two-month Adobe Creative Cloud Pro trial with the drive. Promotions can change, so it is worth confirming the exact eligibility and redemption terms included with the unit you purchase.

Things to Consider
This is a mechanical hard drive, so it should be handled more carefully than solid-state storage. Avoid dropping or moving it roughly while files are being transferred. Its speed is also lower than that of modern portable SSDs. If you regularly edit very high-bitrate video directly from an external drive or frequently move extremely large files, an SSD may be more suitable.
And although 4TB provides substantial storage, no single drive should be treated as the only copy of important photos, business documents, or project files.
Final Thoughts
The LaCie Mobile Drive Secure 4TB is a strong fit for users who value storage capacity, portability, and added file security more than maximum SSD-level speed. Its 4TB capacity provides plenty of room for backups and media collections, while USB-C connectivity, password protection, Rescue Data Recovery Services, and cross-platform support add useful everyday convenience.
If you need a portable HDD for large backups, creative projects, or long-term file storage and want more security features than a basic external drive, the LaCie Mobile Drive Secure is worth considering.
